Cafes and Cowsheds
We have truly memorable cafes close by - Drifters in Granity our next door village (three minutes by car or 20 minute walk) - great food, fun and very casual décor along with a good selection of wines and music; and The Cowshed at Mohikinui at Gentle Annie beach….and of course there are plenty of little local pubs all serving food and drinks, and a great little eaterie serving simple tasty food, just across the park we're on, called Round the Bend.
Barbecues, picnics and swimming
We will pack you a picnic lunch or you can barbecue by the beach at Hector where there's a lovely stone barbecue and seating right by the sculpture of the rare and endangered Hector dolphins which populate the area.
There's safe beach and river swimming two minutes walk away, across the road to the beach, or across the park to the river.
There's incredible rock climbing and gold panning.

Arts and Crafts
The Buller region as the Northern West Coast is called is full of working artists attracted by the climate, peace, and the astonishing landscapes.
Just down the road is one of New Zealand's best pottery and art studios - Hector Pottery (Click on this link) to see what they do. Granity village has a good collection of local art and a population of local artists working from there - painters, jewelry makers, textile artists, and sculptors. Karamea, too, north of Ngakawau, is home to many fine artists.
Freshwater fishing and the best surfcasting beaches on the Coast
Surfcast or longline torpedo fish for rig, blue whiting, elephant fish and snapper. Whitebaiting in any of the local rivers in season (September 1 - November 1) is great fun and no licence is required.
However, a licence for freshwater fishing for trout is required but easily obtained.
Local hunting and fishing guides are available for our world class river trout fisheries.
The Heritage Coal Trail and the Denniston Incline
This is something you will never forget - click on this link to experience the Incline in its working wonder - and then drive up to it and experience the high plateau wonder of Denniston itself - the setting of the best-selling novel by Jenny Pattrick. Just minutes from our front door, is the Millerton Road - Millerton is another high plateau mining village set in unbelievable landscapes of sheer cliffs and bluffs on the top of the plateau above the mighty Tasman Sea. There are wonderful walks the locals have built for you to enjoy and quaint museums and exhibits which tell the Millerton Story.
And don't forget to visit the Coal Museum in Westport which tells the whole story of coal in this region.
The natural wonders of Karamea and the Kahurangi National Park are under an hour from our door.
Sub-tropical fruit growing, beautiful beaches, rare wildlife in sweeping estuaries and the Oparara wetlands and arch and cave systems undiscovered by most tourists……plus two of New Zealand's best walks, the Heaphy and the Wangapeka.
